MEET DR. BARBARA KING

Dr. BARBARA KING

Dr. Barbara King earned her doctoral degree in Mathematics Education from the University of Texas at Austin in 2012.  Prior to earning her degree, she taught middle and high school mathematics for ten years. Since joining the faculty at FIU, Dr. King has created a line of research focused on issues of equity and inclusion in the classroom. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics education.

HER RESEARCH

Dr. King’s research is grounded in issues of equity and inclusion in the classroom. On a macro-level, she uses national data to explore patterns and trends in participation in college science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.  Women and underrepresented minorities are less likely than their white, male peers to earn a college STEM degree, and this reality has significant economic consequences as these degrees often lead to high-paying and high-status jobs. Dr. King’s research investigates when and why such gaps in degree attainment exist.

On a micro-level, Dr. King examines instructional methodsfor mathematics teacher education, working to understand best practices that can help all pre-service and in-service teachers transfer their learning into practice. In this capacity, her work focuses on creating opportunities for pre-service and in-service teachers to practice the art of teaching in a controlled setting. Placing students in the role of the teacher in such targeted and specific situations is essential to the process of transferring learning into practice.
